Peter van Inwagen introduced the concept of the Special Composition Question (SPQ) to the metaphysical field, thereby introducing a study of mereology, defined as the study of parts and parthood relations. Van Inwagen raised the idea of whether there was a definitive answer to the question of mereology, that is to say, are there conditions in which all people consider the parts and the whole consistently?
