The functional changes that occur with advancing age are attributed to several factors, such as genetic defects, environmental factors, the appearance of diseases and the expression of aging genes, or gerontogenes.

Although it is a predictable phase of life, the aging process is not genetically programmed, as previously believed. There are no genes that determine how and when to age. There are, yes, variant genes whose expression favors longevity or reduces the duration of life.

Genetic studies of centenarians have contributed to the identification of variant genes, alleles of normal genes, which may be associated with longevity. On the other hand, variant genes that compromise the individual's development and reproduction process, tend to be eliminated, as occurs in the case of human genetic disease of premature aging, or progeria.

Several theories have been proposed to explain the aging process. The most comprehensive, and most widely accepted scientifically today, is the theory of free radical aging.
