The bedrock of our democracy is the rule of law and that means we have to have an independent judiciary - judges who can make decisions independent of the political winds that are blowing.

Given the quote, the independence of the Judiciary means the ability to carry out their functions without any external interference either from other branches of government or government institutions. The Judiciary is a branch of government saddled with the responsibility of Implementing and interpreting the laws made by the Legislative branch.
