The United Nations established in 1945 is an intergovernmental organization that works within the nations of the world to maintain world peace. Based off in New York, this organization is made up of members who are from the different countries of the world, and also elected after several years.

1. The General Assembly is the highest branch of the organization. This body is the main decision making branch of the UN, with its members being delegates of all the registered member nations of the UN.

2. Security Council is the branch whose main objective is to maintain the international peace between nations. It consists of 15 members, out of which 10 are non-permanent members while the other 5 (U.S, Britain, France, Russia, China) are permanent members.

3. The Secretariat is the branch or section where the day-to-day functions of the UN are carried out. The Secretary General also comes under this branch, along with numerous clerks, administrators and advisors.

4. Secretary General is a one person slot who is the head of the whole Secretariat. He is appointed by the General Assembly but only upon the recommendation by the Security Council. The term of this post is 5 years which may be extended if re-elected. But the maximum holding of this post is only for two terms, i.e, 10 years.

5. The International Court of Justice is the court where international disputes are being judged and decided. Based in Hague, The Netherlands, this court also provides solutions and renders judgement between any warring nations.The 15 judges, appointed by the General Assembly and the Security Council, are active for a term of 9 years.
