The due process of fourteenth Amendment comes under two categories,

1. Procedural due process

2. Substantive due process

In procedural due process, legal steps like cross verification, decision making and counsel availability  are required to be followed in state proceedings.

Substantive due process is used to verify the law applied in all states with particular subject areas like economic or non-economic matters. Both the methods are closely related but the substantive due process plays important role in state legislature which is restricted by application.
