supreme court justices often wait until the president is from the same political party as they are to retire. why?

As per the constitution the Supreme Court judges enjoy a life time office and they can be removed only on the grounds of Impeachment or natural demise.

Explanation:

The forefathers of the constitution had mentioned a phrase “until good behavior” which means that the judges enjoy a life time office. But a judge can also leave the office if he feels that his chair would be occupied by another eligible person who also fights for the good cause similar to him.  

Most of the judges time their retirement with a suitable replacement and this is considered to be the major goal that needs to be achieved by the Supreme Court. The judges of the Supreme Court hold their office until they exert command and it is not influenced by the political climate.
