This excerpt is from a narrative written in approximately 722 bce. adapted from jonah and the big fish hebrew bible yahweh, who jonah believed was all-knowing and wise, said to jonah, "go to nineveh and tell them that their wrongdoing has come up before me." instead of listening to yahweh, as he knew he should, jonah found a ship going to tarshish. therefore, yahweh sent a distressing storm on the sea. then the mariners were afraid and threw cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. the shipmaster came to jonah and asked, "what have you done, and what shall we do so the sea may be calm? " jonah answered, "throw me into the sea, for i know that because of me this great storm is on you." so they threw jonah into the sea, and the sea immediately ceased its raging. then yahweh prepared a great fish to swallow up jonah, and jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. jonah felt remorse, and he repented to yahweh, saying, "i called to yahweh because of my affliction." yahweh spoke to the fish, and it released jonah on dry land. then yahweh spoke to jonah again, "go to nineveh and tell them the message that i give you." so jonah arose and went to nineveh, according to yahweh's directions. 9 what does the story reveal about human character? a. people are often willing to do others good when everyone benefits. b. it is important to to do the right thing even when the cost is high. c. few people will tell the truth if it means that they will face danger. d. some people will do whatever they want no matter the consequences.
