In Sumerian society, scribes were very important because they worked as a channel of communication between the people who were educated and those who were not. In their society, they were considered privileged people. In their land not everyone could read or write, so there were just a few people who were skilled and trained in order to record the relevant events of the society (royal events, Sumerian daily life, trades with people from other lands, descriptions of the land of peacocks nowadays known as India, etc).  

Scribes had the chance to go and get trained in a place called "the table house", in that place the privileged ones were guided by a headmaster in order to develop their skills and patience.

Explanation:  Sumerian society and civilisation grew out of the fact that it was located in a fertile plain between the two rivers, and thanks to agriculture, could develop through trade and exchange of goods. Trade and exchange contracts had to be written because of that exchange, and it was necessary for them, at that time, to have a simple letter, which they had invented, and to have educated and literate people who could mediate those exchanges. Imagine the kind of reputation these people had, who knew how to write and thus participate directly and contribute to the trade. In addition, scribes wrote down very important information about kings, and again not everyone could. The king's chronicler is except that he must  to be literate, he must be a man of confidence and who knows how many more qualifications to have (today we would say references) to be a chronicler. Then the scribes also wrote many records on monuments, palaces and so on, meaning they were considered people of reputation and trust.
