Would a person go east or west of the rocky mountains if they wanted to climb several extremely high mountains?

The highest point of the rockies is Mt. Elbert which is located on the Eastern side of the rockies.

A hiker must visit the eastern region of the US, in the state of Alaska. The Alaskan ranges extends from northward direction to the east in a arc of about 400 miles in total. Along with that the highest peak in the North America, which is the "Denali (Mount McKinley)", has an elevation of about  20,310 feet (6,190 meters),comes in the Alaskan range of mountains.

Explanation:

Most of the peaks in the Alaskan range comes under the list of the highest mountain peaks in the US. As most of them has the height of over 13000 Feet. Which makes it more amazing for any hiker to explore.

There are number of species in the area, as there are tall trees in the form of forests. So, it can be quite an adventure to explore Alaska.
