Why did some southeast asian states rely mostly on trading while others relied on farming

Mostly it depends on geographic location. The states that are close to sea, oceans can benefit a lot by expanding and trading while the ones being far from ports and having a suitable soil for farming benefit from farming.

Along many centuries people depend and built communities based on national resources and their locations.
