The Battle of Saratoga is considered the turning point of the American Revolutionary War, putting the Americans on a clear path to victory. Originally, the British Army, commanded by General John Burgoyne, planned to control Upstate New York (around Albany) to isolate New England from the Southern colonies in an effort to decisively finish the Revolution. Finally, on October 17, 1777, the British surrendered. Total losses: Forces of Washington, 800 dead, wounded and missing; British forces, 1200 dead, wounded and missing plus 5800 prisoners. The Battle of Saratoga was the argument that France needed to enter the war with Great Britain, raising the confidence of the Washington army and giving access to much-needed supplies.
