Nowadays environmental issues are getting more and more serious. The government tries to solve these problems by adding new bills, that affect people’s lives in different ways. Adam B. Summers raises the plastic bag prohibition issue and argues that it restricts the rights and liberties of citizens and has a bad impact on the environment. Summers persuade his audience by showing some statistical data, by reflecting on how it will change people’s lives, and by presenting an opinion common for most of the society.
Summers build an argument by adding some numeral evidence. He uses the numbers “1.6” and “0.3” in order to underline that plastic bags are not so bad for the environment. Similarly, to compare plastic and reusable bags he uses numbers “70”, “80”, and “4”. It demonstrates that plastic bags have less damage than reusable bags: it requires less energy and water, produces less waste. Then he points that the word “single-use” isn’t an appropriate description for plastic bags: he claims that the majority of people use them several times, so the ban will cause their additional purchase. He provides an Ireland example by adding numbers that show an increase in plastic bag purchase percentage. Summer reinforces his argument by all this numeral evidence.
The writer uses information about its impact on the healthcare system and economy. For instance, he presents the findings of some studies, that confirm the increase in the number of diseases caused by reusable bags. Then he continues to provide examples related to people’s everyday life. He claims that “ban would threaten the roughly 2000 California jobs in the plastic bag manufacturing”. Summer presents all these examples to strengthen the effect on the audience.
Furthermore, he chooses some special words for the same purpose. He uses words as “us” and “we”. At the beginning of the passage, he raises the topic of state regulations and criticizes them, while showing that he is a part of the society that don’t accept these regulations. Similarly, he uses the same words at the end of the passage: “In a free society, we are able to live our lives as we please…”. These examples demonstrate how Summers persuades his audience by appealing to emotions and by showing unification.
Summers argues that plastic shopping bag isn’t necessary and will cause many problems in economy, healthcare, and environment. He uses different persuasive elements as special words, numeral facts, and ideas that appeal to emotion. Throughout the passage Summers’ main purpose is to show people that everyone has the right to choose their lifestyles and also to use the bag they want.
