Study of the electrical installation of a house

The document on the following page represents part of the electrical installation of a house.

This installation consists of a circuit breaker, a radiator marked 4.4 kW, an iron marked 1100 W and a lamp marked 100 W.

On the phase line of each electrical device, a fuse is placed. The fuses are marked: 10 A, 32 A and 1 A.

The effective mains voltage is 220 V.

7.1- Are the electrical devices in this installation placed in series or in parallel? Justify the answer.

7.2- Give the meaning of the numbers 4.4 kW, 1100 W and 100 W marked respectively on each of the electrical appliances.

7.3- Calculate the effective intensity of the electric current which passes through each device when it is operating normally.

7.4- Deduce the intensity of the main current, specifying the law used to find the answer.

7.5- Are the fuses suitable for the devices they protect? Justify the answer.

7.6- If the main circuit breaker is marked 30 A, can all these devices be operated at the same time? Justify the answer.

As part of an industrial process, air as an ideal gas at 10 bar, 400k expands at steady state through a valve to a pressure of 4 bar. the mass flow rate of air is 0.5 kg/s. the air then passes through a heat exchanger where it is cooled to a temperature of 295k with negligible change in pressure. the valve can be modeled as a throttling process, and kinetic and potential energy effects can be neglected. (a) for a control volume enclosing the valve and heat exchanger and enough of the local surroundings that the heat transfer occurs at the ambient temperature of 295 k, determine the rate of entropy production, in kw/k. (b) if the expansion valve were replaced by an adiabatic turbine operating isentropically, what would be the entropy production? compare the results of parts (a) and (b) and discuss.

The magnitude of the amount of energy released by burning a fuel source, measured in energy per unit mass, is called its fuel value. note that the fuel value is the negative of the isobaric specific heat of combustion for the fuel. if all the energy obtained from burning 1.23 pounds of butane with a fuel value of 10.85 kcal/g is used to heat 128.0 kg of water at an initial temperature of 18.3 °c, what is the final temperature? note that 1 lb = 453.6 g.
