To maintain a constant temperature, the Earth must radiate as much light energy every second as it absorbs from the Sun. The Earth receives about 1.74 x 1017 W from the Sun, and absorbs about 70% of the incoming light, reflecting 30% of it back into space. That 70% is the light energy that must be re-radiated by the Earth. The Earth's total surface area is about 5.10 x 1014 m2. If the Earth radiates as a uniform, perfect blackbody, what must its temperature be in order to radiate as much light energy every second as it receives from the Sun
