What observational evidence supports the conclusion that most of the mass of the Milky Way is in the form of dark matter? Although dark matter emits no visible light, we have detected it with radio telescopes. The orbital speeds of stars and gas clouds far from the galactic center are surprisingly high, suggesting that these stars and gas clouds are feeling gravitational effects from unseen matter. There is no observational evidence; it is only a theoretical idea based on computer models indicating that the Milky Way could not have formed unless it had much more mass than it contains in stars and gas. They have directly seen dark matter with no guess work.

Consider an ordinary, helium-filled party balloon with a volume of 2.2 ft3. the lifting force on the balloon due to the outside air is the net resultant of the pressure distribution exerted on the exterior surface of the balloon. using this fact, we can derive archimedes’ principle, namely that the upward force on the balloon is equal to the weight of the air displaced by the balloon. assuming that the balloon is at sea level, where the air density is 0.002377 slug/ft3, calculate the maximum weight that can be lifted by the balloon. note: the molecular weight of air is 28.8 and that of helium is 4.

During the experiment if you could triple the breakaway magnetic force with all other quantities left unchanged, what is the new value for the critical velocity if it was v0 (initial velocity), initially? (b) now if you halved the radius with all other quantities left unchanged, what is the new critical velocity if it was v0 (initial velocity), initially? (c) if during the experiment, critical velocity quadrupled with all other quantities left unchanged, what is the new breakaway force if its magnitude was initially f0,?
