Magnitude of a person in a rocket sled as braked and certainly would have been lethal to him. The ability of a woodpecker to withstand
such huge acceleration magnitudes is not well understood, but there are two main arguments.
(1) The woodpecker's motion is almost along a straight line. Some researchers believe that
concussion can occur in humans and animals when the head is rapidly rotated around the neck
(and brain stem), but that it is less likely in straight-line motion. (2) The woodpecker's brain is
attached so well to the skull that there is little residual movement or oscillation of the brain just
after the impact and no chance for the tissue connecting the skull and brain to tear.
PRACTICE PROBLEMS
6. An electric vehicle starts from rest and accelerates at a rate of 2.0 m/s in a straight line until it reaches as
then slows at a constant rate of 1.0 m/s² until it stops. (a) How much time elapses from start to stop? (b
travel from start to stop?
7. On a dry road, a car with good tires may be able to brake with a constant deceleration of 4.92 m/s?. (a
initially travelling at 24.6 m/s, take to stop? (b) How far does it travel in this time? (c) Graph x versus tand v versus t for deceleration

Classify the following soils according to the uscs classification system. provide appropriate uscs designations. a) this sample of well-graded gravel with sand was obtained from a large earthen dam in vancouver, canada. the sample has 73% fine to coarse sub-angular gravel, 25% fine to coarse sub-angular sand and 2% fines. the maximum size of the particles is 75 mm. the coefficient of curvature is 2.7, while the uniformity coefficient is 12.4. b) this dark brown and wet soil with a “strong organic odor” has 100% passing the no. 200 sieve. the liquid limit of the material is 32% when not dried and is 21% when oven-dried. the plastic index is 21% when not dried. c) this sand has 61% predominantly fine sand, 23% silty fines, and 16% fine sub-rounded gravel size. the maximum size is 20 mm. the liquid limit is 33% and the plastic limit is 27%. d) this soil has 74% fine to coarse sub-angular reddish sand and 26% organic and silty dark brown fines. the liquid limit is 37% when not dried and is 26% when oven dried. the plastic index is 6% when not dried.

Some material consisting of a collection of microscopic objects is kept at a high temperature. a photon detector capable of detecting photon energies from infrared through ultraviolet observes photons emitted with energies of 0.3 ev, 0.5 ev, 0.8 ev, 2.0ev, 2.5ev, and 2.8ev. these are the only photon energies observed. (a) draw and label a possible energy-level diagram for one of the microscopic objects, which has four bound states. on the diagram, indicate the transitions corresponding to the emitted photons. explain briefly. (b) would a spring–mass model be a good model for these microscopic objects? why or why not? (c) the material is now cooled down to a very low temperature, and the photon detector stops detecting photon emissions. next, a beam of light with a continuous range of energies from infrared through ultraviolet shines on the material, and the photon detector observes the beam of light after it passes through the material. what photon energies in this beam of light are observed to be significantly reduced in intensity (“dark absorption lines”)? explain briefly.

Aspring is used to stop a 50-kg package which is moving down a 20º incline. the spring has a constant k = 30 kn/m and is held by cables so that it is initially compressed 50 mm. knowing that the velocity of the package is 2 m/s when it is 8 m from the spring and neglecting friction, determine the maximum additional deformation of the spring in bringing the package to rest.
