The aroura borealis, also called the northern lights, is a natural phenomenon that creates bright dancing lights in the night sky that is vewible in both north and south hemispheres (In the southern hemisphere, the phenomenon is called Aurora australis). the colourful lightshow is the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth's atmosphere with charged particles released from the sun's atmosphere, usually caused by the suns solar flare and its interaction with earths magnetic field. the best time to veiw the Aroura Borealis is on a clear dark night, usually between the months of April and August, as most days during the summer arent very cloudy and provides a clear view of the night sky. pinpointing one place to view it is hard, but the closer you are to the earths poles, the better the visibility, as the most interaction between the flares and magnetic field occour at Earths poles

Scientists use laser range-finding to measure the distance to the moon with great accuracy. a brief laser pulse is fired at the moon, then the time interval is measured until the "echo" is seen by a telescope. a laser beam spreads out as it travels because it diffracts through a circular exit as it leaves the laser. in order for the reflected light to be bright enough to detect, the laser spot on the moon must be no more than 1.0 km in diameter. staying within this diameter is accomplished by using a special large-diameter laser. part a if λ = 540nm , what is the minimum diameter of the circular opening from which the laser beam emerges? the earth-moon distance is 384,000 km. express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
