When you apply force on an object you 'accelerate' it. Of courese if there are no other forces, if there are some other forces, you will have to find the net force, and that will give you the direction for acceleration. Now why does an object acceleratee ? The formula for force is, mass times acceleration  . That means if an mass is accelerating that means a force is applied to it basicly.
