Millikan measured the electron's charge by observing tiny charged oil drops in an electric field. Each drop had a charge imbalance of only a few electrons. The strength of the electric field was adjusted so that the electric and gravitational forces on a drop would balance and the drop would be suspended in air. In this way the charge on the drop could be calculated. The charge was always found to be a small multiple of 1.6e-19 C. Find the charge on an oil drop weighing 2.27 10-14 N and suspended in a downward field of magnitude 2.36 104 N/C.

Two steel balls, each of mass m, are welded to a light rod of length l and negligible mass and are initially at rest on a smooth horizontal surface. a horizontal force of magnitude f is suddenly applied to the rod as shown. determine (a) the instantaneous acceleration a of the mass center g and (b) the corresponding rate at which the angular velocity of the assembly about g is changing with time.
