A light string is wrapped around a spool (shape is unknown, thus you do not know moment of inertia I) of radius 0.5 m. A 5.0-kg mass is hung from the string, causing the spool to rotate and the string to unwind. The spool rotates from rest to 10 rad/s in 2 s. Find (a) the angular acceleration of spool, (b) moment of inertia I, and (c) the tension on the string.

The ratio of lift to drag l/d for a wing or airfoil is an important aerodynamic parameter, indeed, it is a direct measure of the aerodynamic efficiency of the wing. if a wing is pitched through a range of angle of attack, l/d first increases, then goes through a maximum, and then decreases. consider an infinite wing with an naca 2412 airfoil. estimate the maximum value of l/d. assume that the reynolds number is 9x10^6.

Carbon is allowed to diffuse through a steel plate 15 mm thick. the concentrations of carbon at the two faces are 0.65 and 0.30 kg c/m^3 fe, which are maintained constant. if the preexponential and activation energy are 6.2 x 10-7 m2 /s and 80,000 j/mol, respectively, compute the temperature at which the diffusion flux is 1.43 x 10^-9 kg/m^2 -s.
