You are helping to design a new electron microscope to investigate the structure of the HIV virus. A new device to position the electron beam consists of a charged circle of conductor. This circle is divided into two half circles separated by a thin insulator so that half of the circle can be charged positively and half can be charged negatively. The electron beam will go through the center of the circle. Required:
To complete the design your job is to calculate the electric field in the center of the circle as a function of the amount of positive charge on the half circle, the amount of negative charge on the half circle, and the radius of the circle.

On a cold day, when the air temperature is 0°c, you empty your lungs and take a deep breath, filling your lungs with 4.2 l of air. if you hold your breath until the temperature of the air in your lungs reaches 37°c, what is the volume of the air in your lungs at that point, assuming the pressure does not change?

Consider an ordinary, helium-filled party balloon with a volume of 2.2 ft3. the lifting force on the balloon due to the outside air is the net resultant of the pressure distribution exerted on the exterior surface of the balloon. using this fact, we can derive archimedes’ principle, namely that the upward force on the balloon is equal to the weight of the air displaced by the balloon. assuming that the balloon is at sea level, where the air density is 0.002377 slug/ft3, calculate the maximum weight that can be lifted by the balloon. note: the molecular weight of air is 28.8 and that of helium is 4.
