Explain the difference between aggression and violence.

Aggression and violence are words that are used interchangeably; however, they have different meanings. Violence refers to physically injuring another person or causing harm and destroying things with an intention to injure others. Whereas, aggression is referred to angry or violent feelings or behavior. Thus an aggressive person need not act in a violent manner. Thus an individual who acts out violently may possess an aggressive attitude however an aggressive individual may not necessarily carry out a violent action. In some cases, aggression can cause an individual to act out in violent ways but usually it is out of an impulse and not done with an intention to cause any harm. Violence can result from the individual’s situational or environmental factors or may occur due to the individual’s mental health conditions or from cultural beliefs. Various research have classified aggression into 4 types namely; Accidental aggression which is not intentional and is usually out of carelessness; expressional aggression which is intentional without any intention of harm; hostile aggression which is done to cause psychological pain such as bullying.it also includes Reactive aggression which is a type of aggression that is triggered by provocation; and instrumental aggression which results when an individual believes that they have the rights to certain objects and occurs due to conflicts about it. It is important to know the difference between these two terms for the purpose of correcting the behavior. Individuals with aggression will be treated differently by therapists than individuals with violent behavior. The latter will require more strategies to be implemented in order to curb and change such behaviors. Thus from the point of treatment, it is essential to differentiate between violence and aggression.
