The main blood vessel carrying blood out of your heart is the aorta. It carries blood down towards the legs. In your abdomen it splits into two, the common iliac arteries, as shown in the figure at the right. The diameter of a typical aorta is 2 cm, while the common iliac arteries typically have diameters of about 1 cm.

(a) The speed of the blood in the aorta can be measured. A typical value is vA = 30 cm/s when the heart is contracting. Find the rate of blood flow in the aorta (current, QA, in cm3/s) and the speed of the blood flowing in the iliac arteries (vI). Explain your reasoning.

(b) As the blood flows around through the system of arteries and veins, the blood pressure drops slowly. While the blood is flowing smoothly, would you expect to see a larger pressure drop from the beginning to end of 10 cm of aorta or from the beginning to the end of 10 cm of iliac artery? Explain your reasoning.

Adiver named jacques observes a bubble of air rising from the bottom of a lake (where the absolute pressure is 3.50 atm) to the surface (where the pressure is 1.00 atm). the temperature at the bottom is 4.00 ∘c, and the temperature at the surface is 23.0 ∘c. what is the ratio of the volume of the bubble as it reaches the surface (vs) to its volume at the bottom (vb)? if jaques were to hold his breath the air in his lungs would be kept at a constant temperature. would it be safe for jacques to hold his breath while ascending from the bottom of the lake to the surface?

Atypical jetliner lands at a speed of 146 mi/h and decelerates at the rate of (10.4 mi/h)/s. if the jetliner travels at a constant speed of 146 mi/h for 1.5 s after landing before applying the brakes, what is the total displacement of the jetliner between touchdown on the runway and coming to rest?
