You purchase two identical houseplants and place them side by side on your windowsill. you water both plants equally. you leave one plant, plant a, alone, but you inject florigen into the cells of the shoot apical meristem of plant b. what would you expect to occur? both plants a and b will produce flowers at the same time, but plant b will have more of them. once the flower is gone, the apical meristem will develop again, and plant b will continue to grow from that stem. while plant b is flowering, its leaves will stop growing, because florigen inhibits leaf meristems. in subsequent years, plant b will only generate flowers in the same place. the shoot apical meristem of plant b will develop into a flower.
