Before accessing the vortex, you must remove any dust, grime, grease or other deposits from the rift, using a good quality detergent and mild abrasive, and then you must dry it thoroughly.  Finally, a thin coating of off-white latex or baby powder must be applied uniformly to all visible parts of the rift's inner surface, and allowed to air-dry.  Only then is the rift available for access.  

If the process is rushed, or if unauthorized individuals should foolishly attempt to access the vortex before the temporal rift is properly prepared, then their haste and impatience would be almost certain to rend the fabric of the space-time continuum.  They would have to go around with torn fabric after that, and everyone would laugh at them.
