Almost every type of society that has ever existed has been marked by some form(s) of social inequality. Why do you think this is the case? Do you think social inequality can be avoided by or removed from societies? If so, how? If not, why not? And what do you think your favorite sociological theory/theorist would have to say about these questions? Sometimes, the differences between social forms around the world have been framed as differences in levels of "development" or "progress" - which assumes that the closer a society gets to our own "post-industrial" model, the better it is. Sociology, however, as you have now seen, does not make these assumptions. Now that you have learned about many different types of societies, compare and contrast one of your choices with the post-industrial society of the United States. What are their differences? In what way do these differences matter for the people who live in these societies? And do they have anything in common?
