Heart Surgery: Who Deserves the Heart? These five people urgently need a heart transplant. A heart has just become available and all five match the donor’s blood type. Doctors from the organ donation bank are having a hard time deciding who should get the heart and a chance at survival. Emily Chu, 34 She is an Asian woman, mother of two young children ages 6 and 3. She and her husband are doctors at a local abortion clinic and she has personally overseen hundreds of abortions in the five years she has run the clinic. Her clinic also provides other services, such as breast and cervical cancer screenings and free or cheaper birth control for women. Tommy Logan, 23 He is a Caucasian [white] man who is currently homeless, living in a shelter. He has had a rough life due to his alcoholism, which started when he was in high school. He joined a rehabilitation group and has been alcohol free for 10 months and promises to continue in this path after the heart surgery. Since he did not graduate from high school, he is enrolled in adult classes in hopes of earning a GED and attend community college afterwards. His dream is to one day run a homeless shelter and become an alcohol & drugs prevention counselor. Mary Ferad, 29 She is an African American woman and activist. With the help of her wife, Michelle, Mary founded an outspoken activist group to protect the civil rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Her organization has been directly responsible for helping in the passage of two new laws that have significantly reduced discrimination and hate crimes against LGBT people. Victor Chavez, 52 He is a Latino medical researcher who is on the verge of finding a cure for AIDS. This cure would save thousands of lives around the world if and when it passes the trial process. Unfortunately, he also has a rare blood disease that is slowly killing him and the doctors don’t know how long he will last. The new heart will buy him some time, doctors hope, but he could still die any day now. Jimmy Jones, 45 Is a Caucasian (white) ex-convict. When he was 18 years old he killed another young man in a gang fight. While completing his 25-year prison sentence, he became a devoted Christian. For the last 20 years, he has been the head counselor in the prison gang rehabilitation center and has dedicated his entire adult life to trying to correct the wrong he did in his youth. Since his parole last year, he has opened up a community center for at-risk youth in the neighborhood in which he grew up. Heart Surgery - Who deserves the heart? Which one of the five candidates for the heart transplant should get the heart? Be sure to explain why he/she deserves a second chance at life more than the other four candidates. What is it about the other four candidates that make them non-deserving of the heart transplant? Explain using a different color font. Answer the questions in at least one paragraph.
