u went to the store and purchases 2 shirts and 3 caps and spend 20 bucks. ur friend went to the same store and purchased 3 shirts and 1 cap and spend 16 bucks. What was the price of a shirt and a cap ? (x = shirts and y = caps)

2x + 3y = 20
3x + y = 16multiply by -3

2x + 3y = 20
-9x - 3y = - 48 (result of multiplying by -3)
add
-7x = - 28
x = -28/-7
x = 4 <=== each shirt costs $ 4

3x + y = 16
3(4) + y = 16
12 + y = 16
y = 16 - 12
y = 4 <=== each cap costs $ 4

substitution :
Mike is 5 years older then 4 times his daughters age. His daughter is 7 years old. How old is Mike ? (x = daughters age)

m = 4x + 5
x = 7

m = 4(7) + 5
m = 28 + 5
