y = total rent

It costs $26 to rent a kayak for 3 hours, therefore
a + 3b = 26           (1)
It costs $42 to rent a kayak for 5 hours. Therefore
a + 5b = 42           (2)

Subtract (1) from (2).
a + 5b - (a + 3b) = 42 - 26
2b = 16
b = $8 per hour
From (1), obtain
a = 26 - 3*8 = $2
