David leaves the house to go to school. he walks 200 m west and 125 m north. calculate how far he is from the starting point.

starting with:    

5 + x - 12 = 2x - 7   

5 + x - 12 - x = 2x - 7 - x (subtract x from both sides)

5 - 12 + 7 = x - 7 + 7 (add 7 to both sides)
