How did the 5 become 15/4... kinda confuse can anybody help?

take 3/2 - 1/4 over to the right side of the equal sign( and then the signs change; the '+' & '-' )

then 1/2x + 3/2x =2x

and 5 -3/2 + 1/4 = 15/4

to get x alone you divide both sides by 2.
