Step One: Collect and organize your data.
1. Using the Super Survey Simulator, survey 10 students of your
choice and gather data. Create an organized representation of
your data below.
a. 3.6
2.7
3.0
3.3
1.7
1.5
2.7
3.0, 3.0,3.8
b. What do you think the purpose of this survey is? Explain.
- To better understand the data you're working with, Note
that, the sample is a subset of your whole population
(population here is a general definition, it could be a
population of cars for example), which means that if you
want to understand your population your best "bet" would be
using a sample to try to estimate some unknown
characteristics of your population. Let's suppose you want to
estimate the true mean of your population, then you would
need a sample, and if this sample is big enough you could
approximate the estimative to the true mean. It's hard to say
exactly what this survey could mean, but the general idea is
to understand your data a little more, see if there is any
pattern, if a certain value occurs more than others, to
calculate the sample mean, median and standard deviation.
Step Two: Graph your data
a. Why is a scatter plot an appropriate display for this data set?
- It will tell you whether you get a higher grade the more hours you study.
What features would need to be included on a scatter plot so that the data
can be easily analyzed? Make a list of needed features and explain why
each is important to the graph.
b. What features would need to be included on a scatter plot so that the
data can be easily analyzed? Make a list of needed features and
explain why each is important to the graph.
- Scatter plot is a graph that employs Cartesian coordinates to show the
values of typically two variables plotted on the horizontal and vertical axes
for a given set of data. The name of the relationship between the two
variables that is shown by the scatter plot is referred to as correlation.
- The following are the features of a scatter plot:
1. An X axis also known as the horizontal axis), and a Y axis which is also
known as the vertical axis. The reason for these two axes is to obtain the
Cartesian coordinates of the two variables X and Y.
2. Dots: There must be dots on a scatter graph. The purpose of each of the
dots is to indicate one observation of the data set.
3. Unique position of each dot: The purpose of the position of each dot is
to indicate the meeting point of X and Y values.
c. Next, you will make a scatterplot. Name a point that will be on your
scatter plot and describe what it represents.
- This represents that after selling 12 ice creams, I gain $190.
