David is painting the poles of a fence. Each pole is shaped like a cylinder that stands 36 inches out of the
ground. Each pole has a diameter of eight inches.
David wants to determine the surface area of one pole
so he can estimate the amount of paint he needs to
purchase to paint all of the poles. One gallon of the
paint he is buying covers 400 square feet of material.
Fill in the formula below to help David find the surface
area of one pole. The variables for this exercise are
defined as follows:
r = radius
d = diameter
h = height of the pole above the sand's surface
C = circumference
V = volume
(Hint: one end of the pole is buried in the ground. Not
all variables need to be used.)
The surface area of one pole equals [pie radius square] plus 2 pie [ radius x hight]

The units of the surface area will be ???

feet
Inches
Square inches
Gallons
