I know this is simple, but I’m having trouble. Can you help me? A plastics stock dropped 1 1/4 points every day of a 5-day business week. How many points did the stock drop that week?

Work Shown:

1/4 = 0.25

1 & 1/4 = 1 + 1/4 = 1 + 0.25 = 1.25

The stock dropped by 1.25 points each day for 5 days

It dropped a total of 5*1.25 = 6.25 = 6 & 1/4 points.

Alternative method:

5*(1 & 1/4) = 5*(1 + 1/4)

5*(1 & 1/4) = 5*1 + 5*(1/4)

5*(1 & 1/4) = 5 + 5/4

5*(1 & 1/4) = 5*(4/4) + 5/4

5*(1 & 1/4) = 20/4 + 5/4

5*(1 & 1/4) = (20+5)/4

5*(1 & 1/4) = 25/4

5*(1 & 1/4) = (24+1)/4

5*(1 & 1/4) = 24/4 + 1/4

5*(1 & 1/4) = 6 + 1/4

5*(1 & 1/4) = 6 & 1/4

We get the same answer as before.
