Question 2 Read this passage, and then answer the questions that follow. Ancient Athens was a city-state of Greece with an economy that relied on trade. It had a booming trade with other city-states throughout Greece and with its colonies around the Mediterranean Sea. The land around Athens was not good for farming, so it had to trade with other regions to get the goods its people needed. Ancient Sparta, on the other hand, did not engage in trade. This city-state farmed instead and went to war against other city-states to take anything else it needed. In the 400s BC, Sparta went to war against Athens because the Spartans believed that Athens had grown too powerful. This war was known as the Peloponnesian War. Part A Imagine that you are a leader of Sparta who must make a decision about going to war with Athens. What do you think are some of the economic costs of going to war? What would some of the eventual economic benefits be if Sparta won? Fill in the table provided below with three costs of going to war and three potential benefits. You may refer to the lessons or do outside research to help you answer the question fully. Make sure to list any outside sources you use. Your can answer in bullet form.
