width, what are the length and the width?

Call the width of the rectangle x.  Then, if the length is three times  the width, the length must be 3x.  Now, if you have a rectangle whose  width is x and whose length is 3x, the perimeter must be  3x + 3x + x + x = 8x.   You are told that the perimeter is 26, so the equation is 8x = 26.  Dividing both sides by 8, one gets x = 3.25.  So the width is 3.25 and the  length is 6.5.
