Alex believes the honor roll students at his school have an unfair advantage in being assigned to the science class they request. He asked 500 students at his school the following questions: "Are you on the honor roll?" and "Did you get the science class you requested?" The results are shown in the table below: Help Alex determine if all students at his school have an equal opportunity to get into the science class they requested. Show your work, and explain your process for determining the fairness of the class assignment process. Okay so my problem is my teacher marked this question wrong, but when I checked over it I couldn't seem to find what I did wrong. Can anyone see and explain what I did wrong? Heres my work for the question: Let A= Students that received the science class requested Let B= Honor roll Let C= No honor roll Since Alex is trying to show that an event (Receiving the class) is affected by the occurrence of another event (whether they are on the honor roll), this is an example of conditional probability. The probability that the student received the science class requested given that they are on the honor roll is P(A | B)= P(A⋂B)/P(B) P(A⋂B)=64/500=0.128 P(B)=144/500=0.288 P(A | B)= 0.128/0.288 P(A | B)≈0.44 There is an 44% probability that students will receive the science class requested given that they are on the honor roll. The probability that the student received the science class requested given that they are NOT on the honor roll is P(A | C)= P(A⋂C)/P(C) P(A⋂C)=315/500=0.63 P(C)=356/500=0.712 P(A | C)= 0.63/0.712 P(A | C)≈0.88 There is an 88% probability that students will receive the science class requested given that they are NOT on the honor roll. When you compare the two percentages, there is a significant difference (44%) proving that not all students at his school have an equal opportunity to get into the science class they requested. Contrary to what Alex said about honor roll student having an unfair advantage, in actuality, students who are not on the honor roll have an unfair advantage.
