3x^2 + 2x - 1

3x^2 + 3x - 1x - 1 ... replace 2x with 3x-1x

(3x^2+3x) + (-1x-1) ... pair up terms

3x(x+1) - 1(x+1) factor each parenthesis group

(3x-1)(x+1) ... pull out the gcf (x+1)

You can use FOIL, the box method, or distribution to go from (3x-1)(x+1) back to 3x^2+2x-1 again.
