The average college student in the United States spends 145 minutes per day studying, according to a 2014 research study of national student engagement. Students at Glendale College test the hypothesis that Glendale students spend more than 145 minutes per day studying. A student majoring in business surveys 100 students who are enrolled in the same classes as he is.

From his survey data he calculates that the mean number of minutes per day spent studying for his sample is 170 minutes per day with a standard deviation of 120 minutes per day.

The student chooses a 5% level of significance. What can he conclude from his data?

Using a t-test, the data supports the student’s claim. The average number of minutes per day spent studying for students at Glendale College is more than 145 minutes per day.

Using a t-test, the student cannot conclude that the average number of hours per week spent studying for students at Glendale College is more than 145 minutes per day. The sample mean of 170 is not significantly more than 145.

Nothing. The conditions for use of a t-model are not met. The student cannot trust that the p-value is accurate for this reason.
