Read the paragraph carefully. Look at the list of animals below the paragraph. Decide whether each
anittal is diurnal or nocturnal. Write the answer on the line next to the name of each animal.
The animal kingdom can be divided up many different ways. One way is between diurnal
animals and nocturnal animals. Diurnal animals are active during the day and sleep at night.
Noctural animals sleep during the day and are active at night. Many animals are diurnal because
it's so much easier to see during the day. Other animals like mice, hunt at night. Why? Well, it could
be because it's easier for hawks and other predators to see them during the day. So, it's safer for
mice to hunt during the darker hours. You've probably heard owls hooting after the sun sets. They
have adapted (changed) to have a better chance to hunt the mice. There are other animals, such as
snakes, who are nocturnal because they live in the desert. It's so much cooler in the nighttime that
many desert animals move about at night to avoid the daytime heat.
