Your company has three factories that are located in wichita, kansas, seattle, washington, and omaha, nebraska. each site produces the same consumer product, but each has a different set of advantages and disadvantages. therefore, the cost schedule for producing a given number of units is different for each plant. all of the unit numbers are for daily production runs. the company receives orders from its retailers on a just-in-time inventory model, so we will assume that the entire order must be filled on the day it is ordered. for each factory, you must first consider the special circumstances and how its cost function is affected. as the company’s production analyst, your goal is to use your knowledge of the three plants to decide how each day’s orders should be manufactured so that the company’s overall cost per unit is minimized. directions: complete each of the following tasks, reading the directions carefully as you go. be sure to show all work where indicated and to insert images of graphs when needed. make sure that all graphs or screenshots include appropriate information, such as titles and labeled axes. use the built-in equation editor to type equations with mathematical symbols that cannot be typed from the keyboard. you will be graded on the work you show, or on your solution process, in addition to your answers. make sure to show all of your work and to answer each question as you complete the task. type all of your work into this document so you can submit it to your teacher for a grade. you will be given partial credit based on the work you show and the completeness and accuracy of your explanations. your teacher will give you further directions as to how to submit your work. you may be asked to upload the document, e-mail it to your teacher, or hand in a hard copy.

Amachine that produces a special type of transistor (a component of computers) has a 2% defective rate. the production is considered a random process where each transistor is independent of the others. (a) what is the probability that the 10th transistor produced is the first with a defect? (b) what is the probability that the machine produces no defective transistors in a batch of 100? (c) on average, how many transistors would you expect to be produced before the first with a defect? what is the standard deviation? (d) another machine that also produces transistors has a 5% defective rate where each transistor is produced independent of the others. on average how many transistors would you expect to be produced with this machine before the first with a defect? what is the standard deviation? (e) based on your answers to parts (c) and (d), how does increasing the probability of an event a↵ect the mean and standard deviation of the wait time until success?
