Bipolar depression is depression with mood swings that you can't control. It's almost like having multiple personalities and you cant control which one comes out at what time. It's very hard to live with but there are medications to help cope with this.

I think being sad can last for a couple of minutes/ hours
But being depressed can last for days/months/years.. makes you shut out of the world, makes you uninterested in things, makes you have suicidal thoughts and other stuffs.
