while the engine idles, check gauges and warning lights to make sure everything is

turn the igniton key to the start position and start the vehicle

let the engine idle

put your right foot on the brake, put your right hand on the gear selector lever and make sure its in park,

make sure the parking brake is set

put the vehicle in drive or reverse
