In Cantwell Connecticut Newton to Cantwell and his sons were arrested and convicted for violation of a state law that required people to obtain public certification before asking for donations from the public the Cantwell sued the state claiming the law was a violation of their First Amendment right to free exercise of religion the supreme court ordered the verdict to be reversed
