How did the cold war between the united states and the soviet union affect disparate regions such as the middle east and southeast asia?

 The regions were sucked up into the conflict and into numerous proxy wars. The region alignment was of major concern to the two powers each competing to check each other powers in the region and extend its interests. The middle east became more important because of its rich oil fields.
