The official name of the Freedman's Bureau was the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands.  It was established by Congress in 1865 to help both former slaves and poor whites in the South after the Civil War.  The Bureau created schools and housing and provided food, medical aid and other forms of assistance.
