Explain how the united states and the soviet union came to the brink of nuclear war in the 1950s

Each Country kept trying to beat each other out in competition of who had the most nuclear power, and power in general...Resulting in many wasted metal tubes, machinery, and nuclear facilities. This was the Cold War.
