Describe the role of intergovernmental organizations, and provide examples of the types of organizations that exist today.

For a starting point, an intergovernmental organization is defined by Harvard Law School as "an entity created by treaty, involving two or more nations, to work in good faith, on issues of common interest." Intergovernmental organizations are essentially how they sound–governments partnering with governments to create one big group, hence why they're intergovernmental.

A famous intergovernmental organization is United Nations, or UN. Model UN is often done in high school to expose teens to world-wide challenges and how countries try to solve them together. 

Another famous intergovernmental organization which is the source of the overseas controversy is the European Union, or the EU, which is made up of 28 European states. Its capitol is Brussels, Belgium.
