Forty-four percent of United States aid goes towards funding military and economic operations in other countries, like supporting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or fighting terrorism and drug trafficking. The final six percent of American aid goes into United Nations programs which usually find relief projects. The effectiveness of American aid changes from country to country, from program to program, but it is undoubtedly necessary. For example, United States aid accounts for 23 percent of all UN programs.
