The church disagreed with the idea. The reason alone was because  ''Enlightenment'' encouraged it's own scholars to bring reason to the study of scripture and tradition.And eventually the Church made it clear that the Bible is not a book of science , but a book of faith that teaches great spiritual truths , among which is the truth that God is the loving creator of all things. the church continued to teach the truths of faith.  The church made it clear that the Bible is not a book of science, but a book of faith that teaches great spiritual truths.
